Are plushies safe for babies? What to look for

All guides

A first plushie is one of the sweetest gifts for a new baby, and it often becomes a lifelong companion. But not every soft toy is designed for someone who puts everything in their mouth. Here is what actually makes a plushie safe for a baby.

The baby-safe checklist

Embroidered features only. Eyes, noses and mouths should be stitched, never glued-on buttons, beads or plastic “safety eyes”. Anything hard that can be pulled or chewed off is a choking hazard.

No small detachable parts. Ribbons, felt accessories, bells, keychain clasps and hats should be absent or sewn on so firmly they cannot come away. If you can get a fingernail under it, a baby can eventually get it off.

Strong, tight seams. Squeeze and gently tug the seams. Loose stitching lets stuffing escape, and stuffing is a choking risk too.

Certified, washable fabric. Look for fabrics tested for harmful substances (OEKO-TEX is a common standard) and a plushie you can put in the washing machine. Babies drool, chew and spit up; you will be washing it often.

The right size. Small enough for tiny hands to grab, but not so small it could fit in their mouth. Around 18 to 30 cm is ideal.

When can a baby have a soft toy?

Babies can enjoy a soft toy for supervised play, grasping and tummy time from a few months old. Rattles and crinkle toys are excellent for developing grip and hearing.

For sleep, the safest advice is different. Paediatric guidance worldwide recommends keeping the cot completely empty (no pillows, bumpers, blankets or soft toys) until a baby is at least 12 months old, because of the risk of suffocation. A lovey is a lovely naptime companion after the first birthday; before that, keep it for awake, supervised time.

What about keychains and accessory plushies?

Bag charms, keychains and plushies with felt hats, scarves or small accessories are designed for older children and adults. Keep them for ages 3 and up.

How we make baby plushies at Plushy Wushy

Everything in our Baby & Toddler range is made with OEKO-TEX certified minky fabric, embroidered features only, and no buttons, beads or plastic parts. Every piece is machine washable at 30°C. Even our regular plushies all have embroidered rather than plastic eyes, but those with felt accessories are labelled for ages 3 and up.

Keeping it clean

Wash a baby’s plushie every week or two in regular use, and always after an illness. Put it in a laundry bag on a gentle cycle and make sure it is completely dry inside before giving it back. Our washing guide has the details.
